The many tourist attractions and old landmarks found within the city of Gyor are both varied and popular. The Bésci Kapu Tér (Viennese Gate Square) is famed for its Baroque architecture and period attractions.

Nearby, the Chapter Hill is close to the Bésci Kapu Tér and is known locally in Gyor as the Káptalan Domb, leading to the city's most historical district, the Apor Vilmos Püspöktere. The Káptalan Domb is home to the beautiful basilica (bazilika) that is Gyor Cathedral, which boasts foundations from the 11th century and architecture that is a slight mishmash of different styles, including a mixture of Gothic, Neo-classical and Romanesque elements. However, it is inside the cathedral where the main attractions at the be discovered, such as the bishop's throne, an elaborate altarpiece and frescoes created by Austrian painter, Franz Anton Maulbertsch (1724 - 1796). Part of the basilica itself, the Gothic-style Héderváry Chapel is home to one of the most valuable and impressive examples of gold work from medieval times in the whole of Hungary. Also look out for the famous Weeping Icon of Mary, which has become a major pilgrimage spot ever since it began to cry tears of blood in the late 17th century. Other attractions close by and around the Káptalan Domb include the Diocesan Treasure and Library (Egyházmegyei Kincstár), and the Ark of the Convent (Frigyszekrény Szobor).

Gyor Tourist Attractions: City Hall - Gyor, Hungary, HU
The Gyor City Hall is amongst the city's most beautiful and recognisable attractions, and stands close to Bisinger Park, where its tall central tower stands proudly above the trees. Famed for its palatial appearance, stone columns, arched windows and highly detailed stonework, the City Hall has been used ever since the 16th century. The clock tower is the building's main feature and offers a beautifully ornate copper roof, being flanked by two much smaller towers.

Gyor Tourist Attractions: Bésci Kapu Tér / Carmellite Church and Fortifications - Bésci Kapu Tér, Gyor, Hungary, HU
The Bésci Kapu Tér is where many of Gyor's most important landmarks and historical tourist attractions reside. The square itself is dominated by the beautiful Carmellite Church, which dates back to the early part of the 18th century and is worthy of a photograph. The northern and north-western sides of the Bésci Kapu Tér are home to 16th century fortifications built to protect the city against possible Turkish invasion and stand alongside the river banks, together with a chapel and bastion. The 'Lapidarium' is situated within the actual fortress and contains an impressive collection of artefacts and attractions from medieval and Roman times. Close by and slightly to the north, Gyor's magnificent Bishop's Castle (Püspökvár) still lies within the fortified walls themselves and features many elements from as long ago as the 13th century.

Gyor Tourist Attractions: Széchenyi Tér / Church of St. Ignatius Loyola - Széchenyi Tér, Gyor, Hungary, HU
Just a stone's throw from the Káptalan Domb and still within central Gyor, the Széchenyi Tér is vast and was used as the city's marketplace for many years during the Middle Ages. Attractions on the southern side of the Széchenyi Tér include the breathtaking Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, which dates from the early 1640s and features both ceiling paintings and white plaster side chapels. Alongside the Benedictine Church of St. Ignatius Loyola is the Szécheny Pharmacy Museum, together with countless cultural sights worth searching out.

Gyor Tourist Attractions: Synagogue - Kossuth Lajos Utca 5, Gyor, Hungary, HU
The Gyor Synagogue was constructed in the 1870s and has recently been restored. Lying across the river and boasting a rather highly decorated cupola, which is octagonal in shape, the synagogue offers visitors a number of specific attractions, such as both galleries and a must-see tabernacle. The music academy is situated next door and was once a popular Jewish school.
